Rod of Asclepius is the usual symbol of the medical profession. Rod of Asclepius symbolizes the art of healing by combining the serpent, which in moulting or shedding its skin is a sign of rebirth and fertility and the staff is a sign of authority appropriate for the god of medicine. The snake that is entwined around the staff is is a rat snake, also known as the Aesculapian or Asclepian snake that apprently has healing properties.

In Greek myth, the rod of Asclepius, is an ancient Greek symbol linked with astrology and with curing or healing the sick/ill through medicine. It consists of a serpent wrapped around a staff. Asclepius, the son of Apollo, was practitioner of medicine in ancient Greek mythology.
